Greg Belyea 2012 Season in Review; Five Feature Wins Highlight Belyea’s 2012 Campaign After a Slow Start to Season

After getting off to an uncharacteristically slow start to begin the 2012 season, Greg Belyea’s year began to turn around with the official start of summer, and he continued to build that momentum for the rest of the season with a total of five feature wins at Brighton Speedway, and a strong run in the Go Nuclear Late Model Challenge Series.

Belyea started the year in Florida with friend and competitor Charlie Sandercock behind the wheel of the Excel Tower Late Model battling against the World of Outlaw stars. While they were unable to qualify in the very tough field of cars that were on hand, the experience that the gained would be invaluable.

When the season started at Brighton Speedway in May, Belyea had high hopes, returning as the reigning champion of the Late Model division. A slow start to the season resulted in only one top five finish after the first four races through the month of May. Belyea still struggled to find consistency going into the heat of the summer, but ended June with his first win of the season. Just two weeks later he recorded his second win of the year, and recorded back to back victories at Brighton in August to storm back into contention for another track title. His final win of the season came during Labor Day Weekend at Brighton. He ended the season third overall in track points.

“After getting off to a slow start, we were really able to get back on track in late June and had a really solid season after that”, says Belyea. “We are looking forward to 2013 and hopefully we can come back as strong as ever”.

As the 2012 season started to wind down, Belyea’s attention shifted to the Go Nuclear Late Model Challenge Series. They had an earlier event at Mohawk Raceway back in July and Belyea had a second place finish to start the series and it resumed at Brighton Speedway in September during the Great Crate Race where he scored a disappointing 21st place finish. Just a week later the series returned to Mohawk Raceway for a weekend doubleheader and Belyea scored finishes of second and ninth. The final race of the season for the Go Nuclear Series came at Brockville Speedway where he was contending for the win before getting caught up in a late race crash and finished in ninth place. He finished the Go Nuclear Late Model Challenge Series in second place in the point standings.

“We enjoy traveling to other tracks with the Go Nuclear Series. Shayne (Tenace) has worked hard at putting this series together and making it better each year”, adds Belyea. “We plan to be back next year and hopefully we can go out and win the championship”.

Belyea plans to get an early start to the 2013 season racing in Florida during the month of February in the NeSmith Late Model Series. Stay tuned to our website for updated schedule information as it becomes available.

Greg Belyea Gets Fourth Place Finish at Black Rock Speedway in 2012 Finale

With the 2012 season over locally, Greg Belyea and the Excel Tower Racing team sought out one last event before they closed out the year.  After making the 5 hour trip to Black Rock Speedway in Dundee, New York for the first time, Belyea signed into the pit area, and was ready to compete in the BRP Late Model/Crate Late Model Challenge event.

Belyea took to the track for his opening hot lap session on a very heavy track.  With many cars on hand in several divisions, the track was much different when he returned for his qualifying heat race.  They had set up for a slick track because of the amount of cars that had taken hot laps after he was first on the track, but as they were sitting in the lineup waiting to go out, a brief rain shower hit the area.  Although it didn’t amount to enough to stop racing, it did effect the setup on the car, but battled to a fifth place finish after starting 11th and made the redraw for the main event.  Belyea started eighth and finished fourth.

“It was a good run for us.  Track position was key today, and once we got to fourth it was tough to pass”, says Belyea after the race.  “We are leaving here without a mark on the car, so we are very pleased with that, and cant wait to get started next season”.

After the race, Belyea made the trip to Chubb Frank’s shop in Bear Lake, Pennsylvania.  The car was dropped off, and will be refurbished and prepped for the 2013 season.  Belyea intends to race in Florida in early February with the NeSmith Series.

Greg Belyea’s Second Place Run at Brockville Speedway Ends on the Final Lap of Go Nuclear Late Model Challenge Series Finale

With the final race on the Go Nuclear Late Model Challenge Series slated for this past weekend, Greg Belyea was looking for a strong finish in a rare appearance at Brockville Speedway in the inaugural Go Nuclear visit to the Brockville, Ontario facility.  Belyea has raced at Brockville in the past, both times against the more powerful open motor Late Models and was looking forward to returning for the first time with the Go Nuclear Series.

Belyea lined up in ninth place to start the 50 lap main event, and after a series of early cautions in the opening laps, he was up to seventh by lap 10.  Just four laps later, the race leader had problems and slowed on the front stretch, and Belyea had now reached third place.  With the race at the halfway point, Belyea had moved up one more spot to second, and looked well on his way to a solid second place result until the final lap of the race when lapped traffic collected Belyea and several others.  Belyea would end up being credited with a ninth place finish.

“We had a great run going here, until the final lap”, says Belyea after the race.  “It is unfortunate, but that is part of racing.  We have had a good cars here at Brockville in the past, but haven’t had much luck to go with it”.

Charlie Sandercock was also in action during the Sprint Car portion of the 1000 Islands RV DIRTcar Northeast Fall Nationals on Saturday afternoon.  31 Sprint cars were on hand and Sandercock finished with a 16th place result.

The previous week, Belyea raced at Rolling Wheels Raceway with the World of Outlaw Late Model Series driving a car from the Boom Briggs/Chubb Frank stables.  Look for more out of this combination in 2013 as Belyea intends to race in a few events with this team.  After starting the race from the rear of the field, he moved up to finish 16th.

Belyea will be back in action this week at Black Rock Speedway as they host a BRP Late Model vs. Crate Late Model Challenge event.  Once the race is over at Black Rock, Belyea will then head to the shop of Chubb Frank in Bear Lake, Pennsylvania where he will drop off a car and have it refurbished over the off-season.  The Excel Tower Racing team plans to have an early start to 2013, racing in the Nesmith Late Model Series at East Bay Raceway in Florida during the month of February.

Greg Belyea Gets Second Place Finish in Applefest Weekend Season Finale at Brighton Speedway; Go Nuclear Race at Brockville Speedway Coming up Next

The 2012 racing season at Brighton Speedway came to an end this past Saturday night as the track hosted their annual Applefest Weekend. Greg Belyea was looking to close out the year at his home track with a solid run, and possibly move up to second place in track points. The 2011 champion had a good second half of the season that included five feature wins over the final 11 races of the season.

Belyea began the night with a win in his qualifying heat race after starting from fifth position. When the Late Models hit the track for their feature, Belyea started from 13th place, and quickly proved that he had one of the fastest cars on the track. He steadily worked his way through the field, and was up to second in the closing laps. He would finish the race in second place, running out of laps as he continued chase down the leader. Belyea’s second place finish put him within 10 points of second place in track points, but would have to settle for third.

“We had a great car tonight, I think we just needed another lap or two and it may have been a different outcome”, says Belyea. “We ended the season here on a good note, and I am happy about that”.

The final race on the schedule for Greg Belyea will come at Brockville Speedway on Friday, October 12th as the Go Nuclear Late Model Challenge Series concludes for the 2012 season. Belyea is currently second place overall in series points after 4 of the 5 scheduled events and is just 47 points out of the lead.

Charlie Sandercock and the Excel Tower Racing Sprint Car will also be on the track during the 1000 Islands RV DIRTcar Fall Nationals Weekend at Brockville Speedway as they take to the track on Saturday, October 13th for a 360 Sprint Car Challenge event.

Greg Belyea Grabs Second Place Finish in Go Nuclear Race One at Mohawk Raceway on Saturday; Gets Ninth Place Finish in Race Two

After a disappointing result in the Great Crate Race at Brighton Speedway last week, Greg Belyea was looking to get back on track with the Go Nuclear Late Model Series as they returned to Mohawk International Raceway for a full weekend of racing.  Belyea finished second on his last appearance at the track back in July, and was hoping to better that position this weekend.  Friday night’s program ended up getting postponed to Saturday, setting up a long day with two full programs crammed into one day at the track.

In the opening heat race at Mohawk on Saturday afternoon, Belyea started from the rear of the field in eighth place.  It didn’t take long once the race started before he started making his way to the front, and finished in second place, making the redraw for a top nine starting spot in the 30 lap Go Nuclear Series feature.  Belyea started the race from seventh place, and was in third as they hit lap 10.  Over the next few laps, he climbed to second, but was unable to chase down the leader.

“It was a good run for us, but just didn’t have enough time to get to the leader”, says Belyea.  “We have a good car, so we will tweak it a little and try and get just a little bit better for the next round”.

Saturday night’s program started just after 8pm, and Belyea started his qualifier from fifth place, and he battled his way to the front of the pack picking up the win.  In the feature, he was trying to make up some ground and looked to the outside lane and just couldn’t find any grip, losing a lot of track position in the process.  He finished the second feature in ninth place.

This coming weekend, Belyea will return to Brighton Speedway for the final time in 2012 for their final points night.  Belyea will enter the Applefest Weekend event in third place in points, and will be looking to finish out the season with a victory.

Following Brighton’s season finale this weekend, Belyea will close out the 2012 season at Brockville Speedway on Friday, October 12th for the Go Nuclear Late Model Series championship event as part of the 1000 Islands RV DIRTcar Northeast Fall Nationals Weekend.

Wednesday 12 September 2012

After rain washed out the original scheduled date for the 2nd annual Great Crate Race on Saturday, Greg Belyea and his Excel Tower Racing team that also consisted of driver Chuck Meyers made the short trek over to Brighton Speedway for a rare Sunday afternoon event. With 30 Late Models in the field for the second round of the Go Nuclear Late Model Series, it was going to be tough task on the dry slick racing surface, but both drivers were ready for the challenge.

Meyers started his qualifying heat from third place and battled his way to the front of the pack, taking the win, placing him into the redraw for prime starting position in the 65 lap Great Crate Race main event. Belyea didn’t fair as well, starting his qualifier from sixth place, but did manage to fight his way to the fifth and final transfer spot into the feature race.

The first nine laps of the race went caution free, but that didn’t last long. When the opening caution did come out, Meyers was running 8th, and Belyea still marred deep in the field. The remaining laps of the race were run with multiple cautions slowing the pace. By halfway, Belyea had worked his way into the top ten despite some damage to the right rear of his car. Meyers had also been patiently waiting to make his move, also running inside the top ten. As the race progressed under multiple cautions, mostly for spinouts and minor crashes as the Late Model teams maneuvered around the unusually dry and slick Brighton Speedway surface. In the second half of the race, Meyers slowly started to move forward running in third place, while Belyea was trying to work his way back through the field after a lap 43 spin. With 16 laps remaining, Meyers took over the top spot, and took home the $5000 to win Great Crate Race, while Belyea limped home with a 21st place finish.

“It was a tough night for our own 25 car, but Chuck really ran a great race and saved his tires until the end”, says Belyea. “I was really impressed. He doesn’t have many laps here at Brighton Speedway, but he proved to everyone that he can get it done”.

Coming up this weekend for Belyea will be a full weekend of racing at Mohawk International Raceway as the Go Nuclear Late Model Series resumes with a events scheduled on both Friday and Saturday night. He will return to Brighton Speedway for their season finale on Saturday, September 22nd for Applefest Weekend and will close out the season at Brockville Speedway on Friday, October 12th.

Greg Belyea Wins Again at Brighton Speedway; Sandercock Takes Excel Tower Racing Sprint Car to a Podium Finish With Southern Ontario Sprints

While the 2012 championship may be out of reach for Greg Belyea and his Excel Tower Service Late Model team, that isn’t going to slow him down over the final few weeks of the season, as once again, he finds victory lane at Brighton Speedway in an incredible second half of 2012. Charlie Sandercock was also back behind the wheel with a pair of events with the Southern Ontario Sprints at Brighton, and would post his best career finish of third on Sunday.

The Late Models had their annual topless night on Sunday night, as opposed to the traditional Saturday night events at Brighton. Belyea started the night with a third place finish in his heat race after starting fourth. He started the main event from the front row, and went on to pick up his fifth win of the 2012 season.

Sandercock raced both Saturday and Sunday with the Southern Ontario Sprints at Brighton Speedway. Engine troubles kept him out of Saturday’s race though, but Sunday was much better as he won his qualifying heat race, and started the main event from the fifth position. He ran a great race, and picked up his first career podium finish with the Southern Ontario Sprints finishing in third.

This coming weekend, Belyea will be in action with the second annual Great Crate Race at Brighton Speedway. This $5000 to win event will have a total purse in excess of $20000 and will bring in cars from all over New York State, Ontario and possibly Pennsylvania and Ohio. This race will also be the second round of the Go Nuclear Late Model Challenge Series for 2012, with Belyea taking home a second place finish in the first race back in July at Mohawk Raceway. The following weekend, Belyea will return to Mohawk Raceway for a pair of events with the Go Nuclear Series on September 14th and 15th. He will then return to Brighton to finish out their 2012 season on Saturday, September 22nd as part of Applefest Weekend, and will race at Brockville Speedway on October 12th to finish out the 2012 schedule.

Greg Belyea’s Good Night at Brighton Speedway Turns Bad With a Broken Shock Ending His Night Early

With the 2012 racing season quickly coming to an end, Greg Belyea and his Excel Tower Service race team were looking for a good night at the track as they continued their march toward the top of the Brighton Speedway Late Model point standings with a strong second half of the season. With the points coming to and end soon, Belyea would need a strong run to remain in contention.

After starting fourth in his qualifying heat race, Belyea drove to the front, and picked up the checkered flag. In the 30 lap main event, Greg started from 12th place and by lap ten he was up to ninth, patiently waiting to make his move. Just a couple laps later Belyea and another car had made contact after some good close racing, causing the right rear shock to break. The damage ended Belyea’s night early and was scored with a disappointing 17th place finish.

“We were patiently biding our time early in the race and we had some inadvertent contact from another car and it broke the right rear shock, ending our night early”, says Belyea. “It is unfortunate, but that’s racing”.

Belyea’s car wasn’t the only Excel Tower Racing Late Model in action as Sam Hazelwood returned to Brighton Speedway in Belyea’s backup car. He started 18th on the starting grid and finishes with a ninth place result.

This coming weekend Belyea will be back at Brighton Speedway on Sunday for topless night at the track as Greg and his fellow Late Model competitors remove the roof of the car to give fans a unique perspective. Chuck Meyers will pilot Belyea’s backup car on Sunday in preparation for the Great Crate Race on Saturday, September 8th at Brighton Speedway. Charlie Sandercock will also be in competition on Saturday night and Sunday with the Excel Tower Sprint car as the Southern Ontario Sprints make their final visit to Brighton Speedway for the 2012 season. The Late Models will be back the following week with the Great Crate Race, and then on to Mohawk International Raceway for a weekend double header on September 14th and 15th with the Go Nuclear Late Model Series. They will return to Brighton on September 22nd as part of the Applefest Weekend, where the 2012 points will come to and end.

Greg Belyea Gets Third Place Finish at Brighton; Sandercock Impressive in Excel Tower Sprint Car at Ohsweken and South Buxton

After winning back to back features at Brighton Speedway, Greg Belyea was aiming for three in a row as he continues his second half surge towards the top of the standings in the 2012 season. Charlie Sandercock was also in action this week with the Excel Tower Racing Sprint car, leaving the comforts of their home track Brighton Speedway and hitting the road to Ohsweken Speedway and South Buxton Raceway.

Belyea began the night at Brighton on Saturday with the traditional qualifying heats. With his success the last few weeks, he would have to start towards the rear of the field, and battled his way up to third place before the checkered flag. In the 30 lap main event, he started from the 10th position, and moved forward methodically, vying for his third straight win in the competitive Late Model division. Despite some handling issues, Belyea raced his way up to third before the end of race.

“It was a pretty good run, but the car just got too loose and we were unable to move up any further then third”, said Belyea after the race. “Unfortunately, the two cars that we are trying to catch in the chase for the championship finished right in front of us, but we will bounce back and hopefully be even better next week”.

The Excel Tower Racing Sprint Car was back in action this week at Ohsweken Speedway and South Buxton Raceway with the Patriot Sprint Tour. With Charlie Sandercock behind the wheel, the team had a great run on Friday night, finishing third in their heat race. With 45 cars on hand, he would still have to run the B-Main, but a second place finish earned him a spot in the A-main. That in itself was a great accomplishment, with nearly half the field going home without qualifying, all of them having more experience then Charlie behind the wheel of a Sprint Car. He started 22nd and finished the race in 19th. The team moved on to South Buxton Raceway on Saturday night, and qualified third in the heat race, and started the A-main from 11th. Handling issues developed on the car, and Charlie came home with a 20th place finish.

This coming week, Belyea will be back at Brighton Speedway looking to return to victory lane once again and get back into the battle for the championship. Sandercock will be back in the Sprint Car at Brighton on Labor Day Weekend as the Southern Ontario Sprints are in action with a two-day event.

Greg Belyea Makes it Two in a Row at Brighton Speedway; Excel Tower Toy Drive Collects 350 Toys and $300 From Race Fans on Saturday Night

For the second time in as many weeks, Greg Belyea and his Excel Tower Racing team made it to Brighton Speedway victory lane. Belyea charged through the field to take the top spot, and held on to win his fourth feature of the season, and continues to narrow the gap in the chase for his second consecutive Brighton Speedway Late Model track championship. It was also the kickoff to the Excel Tower Toy Drive, raising money and collecting Toys for area children.

The night began with the usual qualifying heat races, and Belyea started from the sixth position and advanced to fourth place at the finish. In the 30 lap main event, he rolled off the starting grid from inside of the sixth row in the 11th position. Belyea worked toward the front earlier and made a spectacular three wide pass late in the event to capture his second win in a row.

“I am happy for the win tonight, but even happier for the great support we got for the Excel Tower Toy Drive”, says Belyea after the race. “The kids are the real winners here thanks to the Brighton Speedway fans and drivers.”

Brighton Speedway offered half price admission to anyone that donated a toy on Saturday night, and are pleased to announce that over 350 toys were collected, as well as $300 cash.

This coming week, Belyea will be back at Brighton Speedway on Saturday night looking to climb back into contention in the chase for the championship. He is currently third in points, and just 30 points out of second place.

The next major event on the schedule for Greg Belyea and the Excel Tower Service team will come at Brighton Speedway on September 8th as part of the Great Crate Race paying $5000 to win. Greg Belyea Captures Third Victory of 2012 at Brighton Speedway; Excel Tower Toy Drive Collecting Toys This Saturday Night at Brighton

For the third time in just over a month, Greg Belyea and the Excel Tower Racing team have found their way to victory lane at Brighton Speedway. The 2011 Late Model point champion has stormed back from a large point deficit, and is now third place in points with just a month remaining in the 2012 season.

Belyea struggled early on Saturday night with a sixth place finish in his qualifying heat race. In the 30 lap main event he started the race from seventh and continuously worked his way forward to pick up his third feature win of the season. The win closed the points gap between Belyea and the second place competitor in the point standings.

The Excel Tower Racing Sprint car was also in action on Saturday night at Brighton Speedway with Charlie Sandercock behind the wheel. Charlie had a great race, finishing in fifth place, giving him four top ten finishes in only four starts with the Southern Ontario Sprints. In those four races, three have them have resulted in top fives, with his best finishing being a fourth place result, which he has done twice.

This coming week Belyea will be back at Brighton Speedway as Excel Tower Service hosts the Excel Tower Toy Drive. General Admission at Brighton Speedway on Saturday night is just $5 with the donation of a toy.

“All the toys in the Excel Tower Toy Drive at Brighton Speedway will go to local children”, says Belyea. “No child should have to go without a toy at Christmas time. We thank everyone in advance for contributing, and we look forward to seeing everyone at the track on Saturday night”.

The next major event on the schedule for Greg Belyea and the Excel Tower Service team will come at Brighton Speedway on September 8th as part of the Great Crate Race paying $5000 to win. The next race for the Excel Sprint Car will come at Brighton on Labor Day Weekend with a Saturday night and Sunday show.

Greg Belyea Scores Another Top Ten Finish at Brighton Speedway on Saturday Night; Advances to Third Place in Late Model Point Standings

With the 2012 racing now entering its final full month of the regular season, points are on everyone’s mind.  Belyea has some ground to make up in order to successfully defend his 2011 Late Model championship at Brighton Speedway but he has been running well lately, after a slow start to the season.

In his qualifying heat race, Belyea started from fifth place, and ended with a disappointing sixth place result.  The Excel Tower Service Late Model would get the same fifth place starting spot for the 30 lap main event, and once again, Belyea dropped to sixth before the finish.  While the finish wasn’t what he was looking for, it did launch him into third place in points, which puts him in the highest position that he has been in all season long.  He is just 255 points out of the lead in the chase for his second consecutive Brighton Speedway title.

“We struggled a bit tonight, and didn’t get the finish that we were looking for”, says Belyea.  “We will keep trying and hopefully we can get back to victory lane, and start chipping away at that points deficit over the next few weeks”.

Belyea will be back at Brighton Speedway again this Saturday night, and will be joined by the Excel Tower Service Sprint Car, as Charlie Sandercock will be back behind the wheel as the Southern Ontario Sprints return to Brighton.

The next major event on the schedule for Greg Belyea and the Excel Tower Service team will come at Brighton Speedway on September 8th as part of the Great Crate Race paying $5000 to win.  The next race for the Excel Sprint Car will come at Brighton on Saturday, August 4th.

Greg Belyea Gets Seventh Place Finish at Brighton Speedway on Saturday

After picking up his second win of the season last weekend at Brighton, Greg Belyea was looking forward to getting back to the track this week and attempting to go back to back in Brighton Speedway’s competitive Late Model division.

Belyea began the night at Brighton Speedway with a third place run in his qualifying heat race after starting fifth.  In the 30 lap main event, he started from 10th, and was moving forward early.  He made it up to third place before cutting a tire, and would have to restart the race from the rear of the field after a quick pit stop for a new tire.  Belyea moved forward, and would end the race with a seventh place finish.

“We had a better car then seventh, but we had that flat tire, and that sent us back to the back.  I am not sure what it was, but there must have been something on the track as three of us were running on the outside of the track, and we all got flat tires”.

Belyea remains fourth place in track points at Brighton, only 195 points out of the lead.  He will be back at Brighton Speedway this coming Saturday night, hoping for another Brighton Speedway victory.

The next major event on the schedule for Greg Belyea and the Excel Tower Service team will come at Brighton Speedway on September 8th as part of the Great Crate Race paying $5000 to win.  The next race for the Excel Sprint Car will come at Brighton on Saturday, August 4th.

Greg Belyea Wins Again at Brighton Speedway; 2011 Champion Gaining Momentum After Slow Start to Season

The 2012 racing season did not start out the way Greg Belyea and the Excel Tower Racing team had hoped, but the team has been picking up momentum, and have now won 2 of the last three events at Brighton Speedway, and have moved to fourth in the battle for the coveted Brighton Late Model championship.  Belyea was the 2011 winner, and is determined to get back into contention over the final two months of the season.

Belyea was at Brighton Speedway on Saturday night with his Late Model, and the Excel Tower Racing team Sprint Car was also in attendance with driver Charlie Sandercock behind the wheel.  Belyea won his qualifying heat after starting sixth, giving the team some confidence going into the 30 lap feature.  He rolled off the starting grid from outside of the fourth row in position number eight, and quickly moved forward.  Belyea picked up his second win of 2012, both coming over the last three races.

“The car has really been working well for us the last few weeks”, says Belyea.  “We have been working hard here on our program trying to be more competitive then we were at the start of the year and that hard working is starting to pay off”.

Charlie Sandercock also had a good night in the Excel Tower Service Sprint car.  He was back in the car at the Southern Ontario Sprints returned to Brighton Speedway.  Charlie won his qualifying heat race, and redrew the sixth starting spot in the A-main.  Although passing was at a premium, Sandercock did manage to move up to fourth place, posting his best finish in a very limited number of Sprint car races.

The Excel Tower racing website will soon undergo a major transformation in the coming days.  Please check back often for more information on Greg Belyea and the Excel Tower Service racing team.  Our website is www.exceltowerracing.com.
